Are you settling into a new home or thinking of upgrading your refrigerator? Considering the different types of refrigerators? We’ll help you uncover some of the basics of what you need to know.
French-door refrigerators come with two-, three-, or four-doors (sometimes five), a fresh food section on top, and a freezer section on the bottom. This design keeps food within easy reach and works well in compact kitchen layouts.
Side-by-side refrigerators come with two doors that are side by side, separating the fresh and frozen sections. This design allows easy access to both compartments with plenty of door bins and shelves to keep everything organized. Plus, the half-width doors configuration means the side-by-sides are ideal for a compact space.
Top-freezer refrigerators are a timeless design with wide shelves available in both compartments. However, the fresh food section at the bottom requires extra bending over to reach your food.
Bottom-freezer refrigerators invert the classic design by putting the freezer at the bottom. The benefits of a bottom-mount design mean it’s easy reach to your family favorites and more energy-efficient!
The difference between built-in and counter-depth refrigerators centers on depth. While built-in refrigerators fit flush with your cabinets, counter-depth fridges fit flush with your counter and have shallower depths (around 25 inches). Standard-depth refrigerators, in comparison, stick out past the counter by four to six inches.
Other types of built-in fridges are column refrigerators, which complement a full-freezer configuration. Freezerless refrigerators are similar, except these all-refrigerator models also come in freestanding designs.
Other refrigerators you might need include compact fridges, under-the-counter refrigerators, beverage centers, wine coolers, and kegerators.
Compact refrigerators are a mini version of your standard refrigerator (a minifridge), ideal for preserving extra fresh food and beverages. Under-counter refrigerators are similar, except these are permanently installed in a home bar or outdoor kitchen.
Beverage centers and wine coolers are dedicated drinks fridges, with beverage coolers holding all types of drinks and wine refrigerators cooling only wine.
Kegerators hold kegs of your favorite microbrews, local beers, coffee, or specific cocktails. Keep an eye out for the proper barrel size!
If you don’t have enough freezer space in your main refrigerator or opted for a full-size refrigerator, you need an upright, chest, or column freezer.
If your refrigerator doesn’t make enough ice (or none at all), and you love ice-cool drinks, then consider an ice maker. Experiment with different cube shapes, including gourmet, crushed, and crescent!
